Claude combines strong reasoning and writing ability with the capacity to act — searching, analyzing data, drafting documents, and operating connected apps on a user's behalf. It's available through a consumer chat app, a developer API, and agentic tools like Claude Code and Cowork, so the same underlying model can serve as a conversational assistant or as the engine behind an automated workflow.

Anthropic was started around the idea that AI systems would keep getting more capable, and that safety, interpretability, and steerability needed to be built in from the start rather than added on afterward. Claude, first released in 2023, is the product of that research agenda: a model family designed to be helpful and capable while staying honest, transparent about its limits, and resistant to misuse.

Claude's core capability is turning natural-language instructions into finished work. It reasons through multi-step problems, writes and edits long-form content, analyzes and visualizes data, and reads or generates code, and it does this with an increasingly long working memory and the ability to call external tools mid-task rather than just producing a single block of text. Where Clay's strength is unifying first-party, third-party, and intent data into one view of a lead, Claude's strength is unifying tasks: it can pull context from documents, spreadsheets, calendars, and connected apps, reason over all of it at once, and hand back a completed deliverable instead of raw information the user still has to assemble themselves.

In practice, that shows up as automated CRM and outreach work, research synthesis, document and spreadsheet generation, and orchestration across a company's existing software through integrations (Slack, Notion, Google Workspace, Salesforce-style CRMs, and custom MCP connectors, among others). A go-to-market or operations team, for example, might use Claude the way a growth team uses Clay: watching for signals across their stack, drafting the resulting outreach or internal update automatically, and only looping in a human to review and approve rather than to do the manual assembly work in between.
